Protecting Your Privacy

Wireless technology enables a 21st century connected life and mobile devices have become extensions of ourselves. The wireless industry works every day to protect your privacy in this increasingly connected world. We know that privacy is personal, and people make different choices about what data collection and use is comfortable to them.  You can help manage and protect your privacy in four key ways:

Keep your device secure

  • Cybersecurity best practices. Privacy and cybersecurity go hand-in-hand. We encourage you to take steps to protect your data using our cybersecurity tips.
  • Device disposal. Wipe all data from your device before you trade it in, donate it, or recycle it.

Tailor your privacy settings

  • Location information. Many products, services, and apps use device location information to offer you a more targeted or relevant experience. For instance, your location is needed to receive driving instructions or get local weather updates. You can set your location preferences using location settings on your device or within any available privacy settings in the application or service you are using.
  • Browsing information. Browser cookies and device IDs enable advertisers to tailor ads to your interests. You can set cookie preferences using your mobile browser’s settings. You can also make choices about an app’s use of browsing information for advertising through the privacy settings on your device or of the application or service.

Share smart

Being aware of what you share will go a long way in protecting your privacy and security. Avoid any unneeded sharing of sensitive personally identifiable information, such as your social security number (SSN), and be aware of the data security practices of those with whom you’re sharing this information.

  • Family best practices. Talk to your children about what information they are sharing online and the applications and settings they use. Growing Wireless has more information on how to choose your children’s wireless devices and services, manage their privacy, and develop the best family rules for safe wireless use.

Read privacy policies

  • The best way to understand how your data is being used and stored and the privacy choices available to you is to read the policies provided by the mobile devices, services, and apps with which you engage.

For more information about your wireless provider’s privacy practices, please refer to their privacy policies. Additionally, both the FTC and the FCC offer resources to help you protect your privacy.
