Protecting Your Privacy

Protecting against identity theft, online fraud, and data breaches requires constant vigilance by providers, device manufacturers, app developers, and consumers. The wireless industry works to protect your privacy and safeguard your data every day. These efforts—and other safeguards—include:

  • Company-based policies that describe how providers protect customer data and empower customers to make informed privacy choices.
  • Commitments to strong voluntary codes of conduct, including CTIA’s Consumer Code for Wireless Service, that address protection of personal information.
  • Existing laws and regulations that protect highly sensitive data, such as children’s online activity and financial and medical information.

Consumers can help by reviewing the privacy policies, security features, and privacy settings of their wireless devices, services, and apps. Consumers can customize their privacy settings to fit their wireless needs and lifestyle. Understanding the choices you have and how your personal information will be protected helps ensure your online privacy.

Policy Positions

Policymakers should seek a privacy framework that ensures consistent treatment of consumer information across platforms and applications. Such an approach would minimize consumer confusion and ensure all players in the mobile ecosystem can compete on a level playing field.

The core privacy framework should also be national in scope. While states have important consumer protection responsibilities, the Federal Trade Commission should be the primary agency dedicated to consumer privacy issues.
