This Week in 5G: Buckle Up for 5G

5G is hitting the gas this week with new network rollouts and studies on the impact of 5G on autonomous vehicles. Start your engines!

Samsung announced the new Galaxy S10 5G, its first 5G flagship smartphone. The phone’s large screen and 3D camera will enhance applications built on 5G’s fast speeds, low latency, and high capacity.

Verizon announced plans to expand its 5G Ultra Wideband Network service—which includes fixed and mobile offerings—to more than 30 cities in the U.S. by the end of 2019.

Engineers from VW’s Seat and Spanish wireless provider Telefonica explained how 5G technology improvements applied to autonomous vehicles will improve safety and could prevent 68 percent of motor-vehicle accidents, according to automotive organizations.

A recent survey found that 82 percent of European wireless providers are looking forward to the 2020 European Football Championship as an opportunity to try out 5G-enabled experiences for consumers, including augmented reality.

A new study by Cisco found that mobile traffic–aided by the rise in 5G connections–will increase to 20 percent of traffic globally by 2022, 113 times the amount of mobile traffic generated in 2012.

That’s all for this week. See you next time!
