Thank you, 9-1-1! .
April is National 9-1-1 Education Month, and CTIA and the wireless industry are proud to be longstanding partners of the public safety community.
We are investing in the necessary technology so public safety may continue to receive the most accurate information using the latest mobile products and services:
- Text-to-9-1-1. The national carriers voluntarily committed and achieved making text-to-9-1-1 services available where local 9-1-1 operators are equipped to receive these messages. This new feature is already helping to save lives.
- Location Accuracy. Our WOW Policy Point video this month describes the most recent investment by mobile providers to enhance our nation’s 9-1-1 system through improved 9-1-1 location accuracy. In close collaboration with the public safety community as well as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, CTIA was pleased to aid in the effort to develop the “Roadmap for Improving E911 Location Accuracy,” which is the newest commitment from the wireless industry to provide first responders with enhanced location information.
The wireless industry, public safety and the FCC engaged in a thorough approach to develop these rules that will meet the public’s expectations for wireless emergency communications and providing the flexibility to continue to improve 9-1-1 technologies as new devices and services develop. Considering more than 70 percent of all 9-1-1 calls are made via wireless devices, it was important to make sure these rules were right, which is why we all agreed on the gold standard, or dispatchable location solution. We are hard at work now implementing the FCC’s rules and our roadmap.
Send “Thank you, 9-1-1” Postcards. Throughout National 9-1-1 Education Month, please join us in saying, “Thank you, 9-1-1” by sending your local 9-1-1 professionals – police, firefighters, EMS and operators – these electronic postcards to show your gratitude for the difficult job they do every day.
CTIA is honored to help recognize the public safety professionals who work tirelessly 24/7 to help those in need. Let’s also work to ensure that every community’s 9-1-1 operators and public safety answering points have the funding and technology they need to save lives.
