The next generation of wireless connectivity is here, and it is bringing greater connectivity and compatibility to the entire wireless ecosystem. From service providers to mobile manufacturers, wireless companies are working to ensure that networks and mobile technologies are there to support the rapid deployment of 5G. Jude Buckley, Executive Vice President of Mobile Business at Samsung, sat down with us to talk about 5G and its revolutionary impact on wireless.

What is Samsung, and how does it fit into the greater wireless industry?

Jude Buckley: Samsung is a leader within the consumer electronics industry, providing consumers with innovative technologies in multiple categories such as smartphones, televisions, home appliances, PCs, wearables and tablets. We also have a networks division, which closely works with major network operators around the world to supply the latest technology, including leading the way in 5G network development and advancement.

What are some exciting things happening at Samsung right now?

Jude Buckley: As far as the mobile business goes, there are two specific, exciting innovations that Samsung is currently spearheading: the transition into 5G and foldable devices. Through our networks division, we have worked for the past several years with our carrier partners in bringing 5G connectivity to life. Since 2019, Samsung has been among the first significant players in the industry to introduce 5G-connected, flagship smartphones on a global scale. We have made 5G a reality and have placed it within consumers’ reach. We are proud to continue to lead and scale this technology by including it in our mid-tier smartphones, making lightning-speed connectivity more affordable than ever.

Samsung is also leading the way in foldable screen technologies. Last year, we launched a first-of-its-kind, foldable mobile device with the functionality of both a smartphone and a tablet. This year, we brought to market a smartphone that reimagines everything you can do with a device that fits in your pocket and inspires new mobile experiences, and we are committed to continuing to innovate in this new category.

What are some of Samsung’s main focuses when it comes to getting mobile devices into the hands of consumers?

Jude Buckley: Our motto is “Do what you can’t,” and we try to live by it by providing all our consumers the best technology available. Samsung technology empowers people and makes it easier for them to do what they love. We have strong relationships with all wireless carriers and retail partners in the U.S., and they are our main partners for sales and distribution of our products. We focus all of our R&D investments and efforts on giving our consumers the best experience possible with any of our devices. Bottom line, we create mobile technology designed to unlock new experiences and help people do more of what’s most important to them.

What impact do you expect 5G to have on mobile device sales?

Jude Buckley: We are excited that the collective industry is starting to embrace 5G, which is bringing renewed interest from customers, further handset innovation and new and exciting 5G use cases for both consumers and businesses. Last year we introduced the first 5G flagship smartphone to the U.S. market, and this year our entire flagship lineup is now 5G-enabled. This shows how much we are betting on this technology with our partners. The capabilities and specs of our current 5G phones are absolutely amazing plus we are finding that, in some cases, consumers are choosing to upgrade their devices before 5G coverage is available to them. We are also working closely with our partners to bring unique and exciting experiences to life. As we have seen in past generational transitions, we expect 5G to revolutionize the market and enhance the consumer experience.

We’re focused on optimizing 5G experiences for everybody—by expanding where it can be accessed and what it can do—because evolving networks and reliable devices will be more necessary than ever. At Samsung, we stand ready for the digital transformation and to expand possibilities.

What is Samsung’s role in developing wireless infrastructure?

Jude Buckley: Samsung is a leader in providing 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure to technology-forward operators in the U.S. and around the world. Samsung’s networks roadmap is focused on advancing 5G capabilities and its global buildout. We need reliable, responsive connections—in both crowded cities and rural areas—during a time when we are most detached from one another. We need greater capacity to support more devices on our networks. And we need those devices ready to handle increasing data demands. We’re focused on optimizing 5G experiences for everybody—by expanding where it can be accessed and what it can do—because evolving networks and reliable devices will be more necessary than ever. At Samsung, we stand ready for the digital transformation and to expand possibilities.

Why is it important for Samsung’s voice to be heard within CTIA?

Jude Buckley: Samsung’s position as a leading provider of both mobile devices and network equipment gives us a unique vantage point among CTIA members. We can offer a deep understanding of consumer preferences—more than 70% of US households have at least one Samsung product—while at the same time sharing technical and operational insights on topics like spectrum and wireless siting. We are proud to be a longtime member of CTIA and a leading voice for the wireless industry.
