Member Spotlight: Meet Boingo’s Mike Finley .
5G, the next generation of connectivity, is taking wireless capabilities further than they have ever gone, allowing for new and improved ways of communicating and connecting with others and new ways to interact with technology. We sat down with Boingo CEO Mike Finley to discuss his company’s role in rolling out 5G throughout America.
Mike Finley: Boingo provides neutral host wireless connectivity for large venues. We acquire rights in airports, transportation hubs, military bases, stadiums and other large venues, and we build out converged networks at these locations with our carrier partners in the U.S. and around the world.
We’re playing a big part in enabling the 5G future. We have a variety of venue partners that want to use 5G to enhance wireless capabilities and new connected use cases, and Boingo is working with our carrier partners to build out 5G at these venues. When you look at the breadth of locations we serve, businesses we engage, solutions we deploy, and innovations on the horizon, it’s an incredible time to be at Boingo.
What does Boingo look forward to most with 5G?
Mike Finley: One of the most exciting things about 5G is that its impact is much more profound than the generations that came before it. With 5G, the whole world is engaging not just in the spectrum capabilities, but in products, services and devices. Everything is evolving with 5G, and Boingo is in the right place at the right time to bring the possibilities of 5G to our partners.
How do you see 5G impacting business opportunities?
Mike Finley: As 5G comes into play and you bring it together with other wireless capabilities like CBRS and Wi-Fi 6, it’s going be an incredible opportunity for new applications, new solutions and new ways of doing business. 5G is really the first generation that is providing solutions for businesses to improve operations and the customer experience. At Boingo, we’re taking 5G and adding it to our existing converged networks that serve transportation hubs, airports, stadiums, convention centers, military bases, multi-family housing and more.
What are some use cases for 5G that Boingo is looking forward to?
Mike Finley: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, touchless technologies powered by 5G will be key for facilitating new health and safety protocols like contactless entry and concessions for sporting events and transportation hubs.
For healthcare, 5G’s low latency and high capacity attributes enable remote video monitoring of patients and telehealth appointments. In entertainment, immersive experiences with augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) or mobile betting boost the appeal of live events, while creating new revenue channels.
How does CTIA help Boingo and the wireless industry achieve its goals?
Mike Finley: CTIA has been an incredible leader for Boingo and the wireless industry. Their leadership is part of the reason why America’s carriers and the United States are ahead in 5G and will maintain that lead as we move into the future.
CTIA is the voice of American wireless. It’s amazing what CTIA has accomplished since it was founded in 1984. Their work has brought so much to the wireless industry, and today, what we’re seeing from CTIA is expanded access to spectrum for the operators and other efforts that are really beneficial to wireless companies and our customers. Meredith [Baker] and her team have done a phenomenal job, and it’s really great for Boingo to be a part of that.
How has being a CTIA Board Member impacted Boingo?
Mike Finley: In every single role I’ve been in, CTIA has played a major part in the success of my business. Being part of CTIA and engaging with the leaders of these great American wireless companies that represent our industry has not only been a great experience for me personally, but it’s been a great advantage for Boingo. It has always been a goal of mine to be involved with CTIA in some way. When you look back over history to all the great leaders in the wireless industry that have been on this board, it’s a real honor for me to be on it, and it’s exciting to see the work that’s getting done by CTIA.
