911/Public Safety

During emergencies, wireless connectivity helps us reach authorities, stay informed and connect with family and friends. Our industry supports the use of wireless technologies to help keep our neighborhoods safe and secure.

Policy Topics

Wireless technologies have made our communities safer with reliable, innovative technologies, including text-to-911, Wireless Emergency Alerts and 9-1-1 location accuracy.

CTIA and our members support federal and state efforts to provide first responders with the technology and funding for the latest wireless emergency communications.

Today, we use wireless to call or text 9-1-1, respond to emergency alerts and communicate with family and friends. At the same time, the public safety community relies on wireless to locate emergencies, inform the public and do their jobs.

CTIA and our member companies work directly with the public safety community to bring public safety services into the 21st Century.

  • Location Accuracy: We leverage innovative wireless technologies to help first responders locate where 9-1-1 calls come from, particularly indoors.
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts: We deliver thousands of alerts every year, providing the latest information about major weather events, child abductions and other significant life-threatening events.
  • Next Generation 9-1-1: We support the adoption of Next Generation 9-1-1 technology that will bring voice, text, video to local Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) across the country.

CTIA and its members continue to work as committed partners of the public safety community. As billions of dollars are collected from wireless consumers each year to support 9-1-1, we continue to advocate that those funds are used responsibly by states and localities for 9-1-1 operations and investments – not other government spending.
