CTIA Statement on the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet Mark-Up of Spectrum Bills

January 21, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC Today, CTIA-The Wireless Association® President and CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement in response to the mark-up scheduled by the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet of the Radio Spectrum Inventory Act (H.R. 3125) and the Spectrum Relocation Improvement Act (H.R. 3109):

"As I have said many times, spectrum is our industry's backbone. Despite the fact that the U.S. wireless industry is highly efficient, rapidly growing consumer demand for mobile broadband services means that we are facing a brewing spectrum crisis. These bills begin the process of helping free up additional spectrum for mobile broadband services."

"Chairmen Waxman and Boucher and Ranking Members Barton and Stearns have taken an important step for the wireless industry by scheduling a mark-up for these two spectrum bills.  We hope that the inventory and relocation improvement processes will precede and follow, respectively, a process to reallocate significant spectrum for advanced wireless services so that America’s wireless industry can continue to be the world’s leader.

"The wireless industry is a source of comparative advantage for America’s economy and we look forward to working with Congress, the FCC, and other stakeholders to ensure that we retain that position in the future."
