WASHINGTON, DC – Today, CTIA-The Wireless Association® President and CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement in response to Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller's (D-WV) introduction of a bill that would direct the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to conduct a pilot program expanding the Lifeline Program to include broadband service:
"We applaud Chairman Rockefeller for the introduction of this important legislation. Studies have shown that access to broadband is critical in today's society. Unfortunately, the cost of connecting to the Internet is often out of reach for low-income Americans. Senator Rockefeller and his colleagues understand the importance of expanding the Lifeline and Linkup programs to help achieve this admirable goal. We look forward to working with the Chairman and other members of the committee on this important piece of legislation."
