Dr. Jay M. Bernhardt, the Director of the National Center for Health Marketing at the CDC, sat down with us for our March WOW's Insider Interview to talk about novel case studies of wireless technology enhancing public health initiatives around the world. Dr. Bernhardt also shares his perspective on the enormous value wireless technology can provide by providing access to information and creating a personal channel of communication between health care providers and patients. Come check out what else Dr. Berhnardt has to say as well as what else we have to offer in our March installment of CTIA’s Wonder of Wireless webcast.

Mobile phones, particularly, today's PDA smart phones, will play a major role in outpatient care and consumer-directed disease management. Currently, more than 40 percent of Americans suffer from some form of chronic disease, to which disease management software could make an invaluable contribution to their care and disease outcomes. The obstacles to this adoption have had more to do with WHO would pay for it, as opposed to HOW we would do it. I envision this paring very well with our up and coming (and more cost effective) consumer-driven model.
With the power and versatility of today's smart phones, disease management apps could be only a few clicks away. We must overcome any regulatory hurdles, improve on phone designs and standards, usability, and customer support.
I have authored models and apps in this space since 1997, before even when phones and PDAs were capable of such apps. I really like what I see today. But it still needs some more work.
