MyWireless.org 2007 Polls Show Consumer Perspective
MyWireless.org continued to take the pulse of American wireless consumers, and the data shows they are overwhelmingly positive about wireless. Consumers today consider wireless an extremely good value and don’t want the government making decisions for them. Wireless continues to be their service of choice, not only for staying connected, but also for mobile Internet content, music, gaming, video, and more, all while on-the-go. Unfortunately, American wireless consumers today face more than 14 percent on average in combined local, state and federal wireless taxes, fees and surcharges on their monthly cell phone bills. Clearly, for our policymakers, there really is no better time than the present to start relieving Americans of excessive taxes on communicating.
MyWireless.org 2007 polling data also showed that 93 percent of wireless consumers were extremely happy with their wireless services and choices, and don’t want their state or the federal government meddling with regulations in a marketplace that works for them. Consumers simply do not favor more laws or regulations on wireless. Seventy five percent would not be willing to pay more for so-called “consumer protection” regulations, even when spun by politicians as a “consumer bill of rights.” Sixty-seven percent believe new government regulations on cell phone service would make their cell phone service more expensive. Consumers overwhelmingly want to prevent more taxes on wireless. Survey data showed that 83 percent think they pay enough – or too much – and support policies that would prohibit more state and local wireless taxes.
A Bright Future for American Wireless Consumers
MyWireless.org and its 140 coalition partners will continue to inform, assist, and mobilize consumers to impact policy decisions that affect their wireless choices, value and service. In 2008, MyWireless.org will continue to provide research, actively engage the media, and mobilize consumers to directly contact policymakers on the state and local levels. More than one million consumers are already making a difference, and as governments across the country attempt to over tax and regulate wireless, MyWireless.org will continue to help consumers protect the wireless services they love.
