Wireless Wave: This is a purely personal question. What do you think of the job so
far? What’s the best thing about it?
Chairman Martin: A very exciting thing about serving on the Commission is watching
technology. Technology affects every aspect of consumers’ lives today. It affects how they entertain themselves, educate their children, and work at home and in the office.
You can see the real world impact of these great technological changes as they occur.
You can see how these technologies are beginning to converge, and you get a sense of the exciting services that consumers will soon be able to get: entertainment on wireless devices, hybrid phones that use both wireless LAN and cellular technology, seamlessly handing off calls.
You know, the wireless industry has been one of the great success stories from the Commission’s point of view. Today, more than 90 percent of consumers live in areas with at least three wireless providers. Consumers benefit from these competitive alternatives in the marketplace. They will only benefit more as other new services come to market.
Watching all of this up close is the best part of the job.
